finally, a picture-laden post about our trip to mexico (part 1)

i guess it's a little needless to say that we had a great time in mexico last week. for the most part, the weather was warm and sunny. we ate terrific food (including fulfilling dabney's near obsession with fish tacos). we were both the recipients of deep dark tans. we saw a great many beautiful landscapes that could be no more different than our regular new england surroundings. plus, we had a ball traveling with these two nice gentlemen.

if i had a peso for everytime the four us were called "honeymooners," i might be able to afford my own mexican island. after a while, we thought we might as well immortalize the moniker. wilhelm and i must have been writing our names in the sand elsewhere.

Honeymooners

in a nutshell - here was our mexican route:
dabney and i (sans fiancées) arrived in cancun and then promptly beat the hell out of there (thanks to much advice) and headed off to comparatively quaint isla mujeres fitting since it is the isle of women - where we first encountered the turquoise blue carribean and discovered the joys of tiny cucinas economicas that served great home-cooked meals. here i am with a big bowl of sopa de lima (lime soup), which was like a zesty, limey chicken soup.

after a day on a scooter, we went to the beach and also visited with some sea turtles at a local hatchery. next up: playa del carmen - our rendez-vous point with the boys.

Playa del Carmen

a little unnerved by the contant presence of giant cruise ships dumping patriots and packers fans in search of the nearest sports bar to watch the playoffs, we decided to take off in a rental car and leave fair playa del carmen behind. our mini-roadtrip lead us to valladolid where we paused to check out this small town's sites and its lively city park.

it was a short drive onto chichen itza - the first of the many mayan ruins we'd encounter on our journey. as expected it was astonishing large and unbelievably HOT. the four of us were smart enough to get there quite early before the throngs of buses delivering folks from cancun arrived.
