thoughts on the super bowl

like many other new englanders, we have plans to do some major couch potato-ing on sunday evening (complete with beer and chili tofu-dogs) to watch the biggest sports spectacle on earth - the super bowl.

we probably define the term fairweather fan. not even sure if the term "fans" can be applied to us - first, we usually have to decide which team has the better uniform, which we sometimes even mistakenly call "outfits" - much to my brother-in-law's dismay, i am sure. we chat over important plays, and are known to switch to the puppy bowl on breaks (and even forgetting sometimes to switch back over to the big game). nonetheless, we are curious to see whether the pats can really pull of this perfect season thing, 18-0 and a superbowl crown.

mayors menino and bloomberg have got their friendly wagers set. i always love hearing about such things. here's what the winning mayor will receive if their team wins.

from boston:
--100 cups of New England Clam Chowder from Legal Sea Foods;
--42 pounds of coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts in honor of Super Bowl XLII
--12 dozen Boston Cream Pies and 12 Dozen Parker House Rolls (in honor of Tom Brady’s #12) from Boston’s Omni Parker House Hotel
--100 Kayem Old Tyme franks and 100 al fresco sun-dried tomato chicken sausages, the best-selling dogs in New England
--20 Pizzas from Sal’s – one pizza for each selection on the menu
--5 Cases of Brigham’s Boston You’re My Home Ice Cream and 5 cases of Cherry on the Top Frozen Yogurt Bars from Elan.
--100 servings of Stonyfield Farm Organic Yogurt

from nyc:
--42 pastrami and corned beef sandwiches from Carnegie Deli
--42 “Big Blue Cheese Eli Mann-Eater Burgers” from Gallagher’s Steak House
--One case of beef cocktail patties and one case of chicken cocktail patties from Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill in the Bronx
--A selection of five pizzas from Goodfella’s Pizzeria on Staten Island
--42 pounds of rugelach, 42 pounds of assorted layer cakes and 42 black and white cookies from Junior’s
--One 2.5 gallon tub of lemon ice and one 2.5 gallon tub of ice of the flavor of Boston’s choice from the Lemon Ice King of Corona
--100 servings of Manhattan clam chowder and one bushel of Blue Point Oysters from the Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant
--20 pounds of “Super Steak” from Peter Luger Restaurant and six bottles of Peter Luger steak sauce

which city's loot would you rather win?

chichen itza is the funnest word to say

just as we are getting over our pacific time zone jet lag (one of the reasons for the lack of posts this past week) and catching up on post-holiday orders, we're off again. our m.o. for surviving new england winters it is to avoid as much of it as as possible.

about this time every tear, we take off for warmer climates. so tomorrow , it's mexico or bust. i've never been (except for a day trip to tijuana once) and i am very excited by the prospect of sun, sand, mayan ruins, and tequila (to-kill-ya).

i don't speak a lick of spanish, so i was delighted to find a series pimsleur language cds - a token from girlladyfriend's former publishing days - hidden within our color-coded bookshelves. after lessons one and two, i can safely report that i speak spanish with a bit french accent.

i am nearly all packed: swimsuit, snorkel, sketchbook, and trashy magazines. what else do i need?

see you all in two weeks...

sane city?

generally, i am a pretty optimistic, happy-go-lucky kind of person, but i have to admit there is something about las vegas that often brings out the worst in me. in the city of sin, i become a difficult and bitter grouch. is it the non-stop ringing of slot machines, the secondhand smoke, the lack of sunlight? while vegas is a popular vacation destination and especially inviting on new year's eve, my constant cantankerousness, caused by god knows what, pushed dabney to the edge. she had take me aside, slap a cocktail in my hand, and tell me to shut up before i snapped out of it all and began to sit back and enjoy myself.

after a little gambling, a winning streak*, a musical, and fireworks, all seemed right in the world. thanks to crazy bride and the thought she put into our new year's eve, i managed to have a pretty good time afterall.

Before 2008

*we nearly left las vegas $200 richer, but decided to blow most of it on a meal at thomas keller's bouchon the evening of our departure. mind you, it was worth every dime.

jetlagged

just got in on a red-eye from las vegas. thanks to the 5 hour jetblue ride, we've gotten sucked into "america's next top model" - a vh1 modelthon actually. can i say that this might be the trashiest cheesiest thing i have even seen on television? in my exhausted state, it's just what the doctor ordered.

more soon.
